Rare Birds Stop Over in Tomigusuku

The rare Black-faced spoonbill (Platalea minor) has been seen at Yone pond in Tomigusuku village. There are only 600 Black-faced spoonbills in the world. The birds, which have a black bill shaped like a spoon, breed in Korea and come to Kyushu, Okinawa, Taiwan, Southern China in autumn. They have been coming to the pond in Tomigusuku every year since 1995 and this year there are four of them stopping over.
