Thanks

Date Posted: 2001-08-16

I was a tourist from India to Okinawa for the last two weeks. .On August 4 as I was driving on a small road near a base in Ginowan I noticed a small boy was laying on the side of the road. He was what appeared to be in pain and I wasn't sure how I could help. I tried to flag down numerous cars but no one stopped.

Since I cannot speak Japanese I was almost going to take this boy to the nearest Hospital or Police station.

After a few minutes a scooter stopped with an American on it. He spoke some Japanese and tried to speak to the boy who was by now turning blue in the face. He told me to get help and started performing thrusts to the boy's stomach. I had been gone for about what seemed eternity and when I returned the boy was sitting up drinking some water.

The relief I felt when I saw this. The American assured me the boy was all right now as he had had some candy logged in his throat and now it was out. The man on the scooter left and he stated he was late for his English Class.

After the Ambulance came and all the commotion was over, I noticed the man on the scooter had left his notebook. I picked it up and found his name in it but there is no address for me to contact him. The name in it is Robert Swanson/ICB Branch, and it looks like he is an English teacher at some kind of private school.

Robert, if you are reading this I would like to thank you for your assistance, and for saving a boy from what could have been death. The boy's mother also wanted to give you so much thanks that she was in tears when the ambulance people told her what had happened and what you did.

Japan Update may I send you Robert's notebook so that if he contacts you he may have it back? I know that you are the main English paper on Okinawa and that is why I am writing you. Thank you for listening.

Sincerely,
Maria
