Stop Catsí AIDS Spreading to Lynx

A conference on preventing FIVB, the catsí version of AIDS from infecting the Iriomote lynx was held at the International Coral Research and Monitoring Center in Ishigaki city last Wednesday. Six cats, both abandoned ones and pets, have been found to be carrying FIVB on Iriomote island. Researchers are concerned at the possibility of FIVB jumping species to the Iriomote lynx.

At the meeting, the Iriomote Endangered Species Protection Center said numbers of abandoned cats are increasing on the island. Also the Iriomote Myer Group, a non-profit organization that spayed and neutered 75 pet cats between May and July on the island, insisted importance of continuing the activity. A study of catsí diseases and a spaying and neutering program will start this month.
