Band Profile: IréBy: David Knickerbocker Date Posted: 2001-08-16 ![]() Playing a fusion of reggae and rock, Iré has a feel that keeps the same aggressiveness of some of the local bands, but also captures the essence of the island in presenting the band’s laid-back feel. With cutting edge drumming and a flowing bass line that carries the beat and band, this talented local group has a feel completely aside from trend. You can truly tap into the passion and attitude when lead singer/guitarist Satoshi belts out sublime lyrics. You can also tell that the group has a special liking to sublime with how often they jump into sublime covers, changing and molding them into their own style, and attitude. They’re not just another cover band. You can hear the originality in their style. It’s tangible. Iré is not necessarily a reggae band, nor are they a straight rock and roll band. Fusion is the key! I guess you could consider them aggressive reggae. After three months of sitting on the sidelines, Iré is back, and they are more than ready to hit the Okinawa band circuit again. This month, they will perform at the 7th Heaven Koza, a live house near the Gate 2 Street/Highway 330 intersection, on Aug. 16, 21, and 26. On Aug. 26, they will perform with 8-Ball at the 7th Heaven for a special BBQ and music event. The cover charge is only $5 on Aug. 16, and 21, and $7 on Aug. 26. For more information on any of these events, call the 7th Heaven Koza at 098-982-1987. If you’re looking for something completely different than the hardcore and indies scenes that have taken over the island in recent years, you ought to check out Iré. They are a band you can truly groove to. You can’t help tapping your feet, bobbing your head, wanting to stand up and move around a bit. As for the future of the band, Iré really isn’t that concerned. “Whatever’s clever,” says bassist Stacy Miller.
