Kume Island officials present tourism plans

Local government officials of Kume Island visited the Okinawa Prefectural Office Friday, requesting cooperation and help with the island’s sightseeing development plan, in order to increase the number of tourists from current 80,000 to 150,000 per year by 2006.

According to the plan, Kume officials want to establish an “Island School” for visitors to study the local nature and living culture through a local guide. The island also has plans under consideration of constructing a spa house that is furnished with an open-air bath and a swimming pool that use deep-sea water.

Itokazu chief of sightseeing resort section said “I want every region to know the character that they have and to make use of them for increasing the number of tourists.”
