Japanese, U.S. students hold conference

Date Posted: 2001-08-16

The 53rd Japan-US Student Conference was held on Okinawa Aug. 9 through 11. 120 students from both countries participated, and exchanged views on several topics, including military base issues in Okinawa and the quest for Okinawan independent economy.

On the first day, the participants visited Kadena Air Base, war memorial sites in the southern part of the island and the Japanese Self-Defense Force base in Naha to observe the sites’ present state. On the second day, students and six professors and newspaper reporters held a panel discussion at the Okinawa International Youth Hostel in Naha City. Discussing the base issues, one of the participating students said, "I wonder if Okinawan media is reporting the real facts concerning American military bases in Okinawa." Another students commented that, "this problem should not be talked only in Japan but also in the U.S."
