At One gospel group to perform at Sugar Hall

Date Posted: 2002-03-08

Okinawan gospel group At One will be giving a special performance called “Sweet Gospel Concert” at the Sashiki Sugar Hall on Friday, March 15. At One is a hip-hop melodic gospel group with a smooth contemporary feel. They have been together as a group for eight months, deciding to form when the pastor of Mount Olive Church approached Dathan Boyd with the idea. Boyd had been singing in the church choir for a while, and other members had played instruments at church, but the pastor told him that it was time to start a group and that God’s blessing would be on it. Mount Olive is a non-denominational church on Route 58 on the second floor of Lawson’s in Ginowan City.

The group is made up of four singers (Dathan and Selena Boyd, Tuanna Trusty and Jasmine Brown) and three instrumentalists (Greg Stong on bass, Derrick Newton on keys and David Roberts on drums). Boyd is currently stationed with the Army on Fort Buckner. He has been on island for three-and-a-half years and has about two years of his tour left. However, if things go well for At One, he is considering staying on Okinawa long term. He considers his group on a very serious level and says that this concert is only the first of many. “We have performed in the past, but this is the first event belonging to us.” Lately the group has been working hard preparing for Sugar Hall. “We want to establish this concert so you’ll get what you expect from an At One concert.”

The idea for this concert first came into being at another gospel event at Sugar Hall. There, Boyd met the group Gloria, the guest for their upcoming event, as well as the promoter from Grace Artist Promotions. Boyd says he approached the promoter and said, “Hey, I want to take over the island of Okinawa to where anytime At One throws a concert, everyone just has to be there.”

The group is also working on an album called “Crazy Prayze,” which is being recorded at Climax Studios. “We’ve recorded eight songs so far and are looking to release this album in five months or sooner,” says Boyd. “We named it ‘Crazy Prayze’ because we are just praising the Lord on a crazy level, not worrying about anything, understanding we were made for praise.”

The Sweet Gospel Concert will also feature Japanese gospel group Gloria. This group of young women performed at the last gospel concert at Sugar Hall and won a contest providing them with a ticket to perform at an even larger contest in Tokyo.

If you’re into gospel music, you’ll surely enjoy this event. “This is going to be great,” says Boyd. “It’ll be a good place to be, and you won’t want to miss it!” Tickets and a map to the venue are available at our Japan Update office in Mihama behind the Boston Club restaurant and Tecmopia game center.
