Awamori sales to mainland increase quarter

Date Posted: 2001-08-16

Okinawa’s original liquor, Awamori has been well received in mainland Japan despite the continuous economic recession.

According to the Okinawa Awamori Brewers’ Association, the total volume of Awamori distributed during the first half of the year stayed almost the same as last year at about ten thousand liters. The volume distributed outside Okinawa marked a 25.1 percent increase from last year. That means that Awamori exports to outside Okinawa has reached a ten percent share of total volume produced here. The association stated that the brewers’ aim for more sales in mainland. The goal is to increase the share up to thirty percent of the total. The brewers believe that the consumption volume in Okinawa has already hit the ceiling and further significant increase in sales can only be realized outside Okinawa.
