Merger Suggested for Ailing Bus Co.

Date Posted: 2000-11-10

A new bus company created by a merger between the Ryukyu, Naha, Okinawa, and Toyo Bus Companies is being considered at the Bus Company Merger Research Office. The bus companies are all in a serious financial difficulty. Large pay and staff reductions were also suggested in the report, which was submitted to the companies and their unions last Tuesday.

The workforce would be reduced from 1730 to 1224 employees. The number of buses would be cut from 600 to 500. Salaries would be 15 percent less. The plan envisages a recovery from financial difficulty within ten years.
