Anti-Pine Tree Killing Worms Demo

Date Posted: 2000-11-03

Over 3000 pine trees have been damaged in Gushikawa city by a parasitic worm called helminthe or matsukui-mushi. A demonstration on how to exterminate the worms, which can kill pine trees, was held on Monday at Gushikawa Outdoor Recreation Center.

Participants included members of Forestry Associations, residents of Gushikawa city and forestry workers of the national and prefectural governments and workers from many towns and villages of Okinawa. They cut 40 to 50 damaged pine trees, using chain saws and burned some of them.

The number of pine trees damaged by helminthes reached 3212 this year in Gushikawa city. About 1200 were damaged last year.
