Researchers Start Looking for Dugongs

Date Posted: 2000-11-03

The Self Defense Agency started researching the habits of dugongs off Chinen Point, Chinen Village on Monday, using a small airplane. This study may affect the building of an American Base at Henoko beach in Nago. Environmentalists say construction of the new base will destroy the habitat of the dugong.

Despite bad weather they spent an hour in the air, but no dugongs were found. The study will continue for three months, using a helicopter and a small airplane. The two researchers in the airplane have observed dugongs before, in the Philippines.
