Canadian PM Boosts Okinawa’s Ice Rink

Date Posted: 2000-11-03

Okinawa’s only ice skating rink, Southern Hill in Haebaru has experienced a mini boom after Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien paid a visit to the facility during the G-8 Summit in July. The Prime Minister brought with him a Canadian childrens’ team who soundly defeated a local team of youngsters in an exhibition match.

The Okinawan team has since trained regularly three times a week and is reportedly eager to redeem themselves as soon as a chance arises. The rink gets lots of visitors from schoolchildren who tour Okinawa. Children from the mainland find ice skating exciting in a tropical climate, while children from Okinawa’s outer islands, most of whom have never seen snow in their lives, are eager to experience winter sports.

The Southern Hill opened for business in February 1997 and is the third ice skating rink in the prefecture. The two earlier ventures, one in Ameku, Naha City and another in Gushikawa failed and had to close.
