Tsuken Island seeks to remedy junk car problem

As a countermeasure for illegally dumped cars that plague Tsuken Island in Katsuren Town, the island assembly has decided to create a regulation that makes it mandatory for people who bring in a car to the island to pay the disposal fee prior to transferring the car to the island.

The local assembly on the island has already approved the regulation, and if approved by the Katsuren Town assembly, it will the first such regulation in Okinawa.

Under this regulation, a person who brings in a car to the island will have to show the receipt of payment of the disposal fee on embarkation. Once the car is confirmed dumped on the island, it will be disposed of using the fee already paid.

The island has been suffering from illegally dumped cars that were brought in just before scrapping. There are currently 450 scrapped cars on the small island.
