Okinawa’s top 100 firms increase sales

Date Posted: 2001-08-09

The Okinawa branch of Tokyo Shoko Research Company announced the top hundred firms by total sales in the prefecture for the year 2000, excluding financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies.

The sum of total sales by the top hundred companies reached the highest ever on record, totaling ¥1.7 trillion, which is 5.3 percent up from the previous year. The number of firms with sales of over ¥10 billion was 53, three more than the previous year.

Okinawa Electric Power Company ranked again as the number one, followed by Okinawa Oil Refinery Co. and San-A department stores as the second and third. The top three are the same as last year.

The Research Company stated that even though the recession has been around for long time, those firms listed have managed to increase their sales meaning the gap between the winners and the small firms that are struggling is widening.
