Runaway Crane Kills Couple, Badly Hurts Daughter

Date Posted: 2000-11-03

A couple was killed and their 11-year old daughter seriously injured when their car was crushed between a house and a mobile crane, Friday, on Highway 321 at Okuma intersection in Nakagusuku.

According to the police, the crane approached the intersection downhill when its brakes failed. It first brushed against a car that had stopped at the traffic light at the intersection and then ran against a red light across the intersection crashing into a house on the other side.

The victims were heading south and entered the crossing on the green light when they were hit by the crane. The two adults who were sitting on the front seats were killed instantly. Their daughter who sat in the back survived and was taken to a hospital with multiple serious injuries. It took rescue crews almost an hour to extract her from the wreckage. The accident closed the intersection for four hours and caused massive traffic jams to all directions.

The driver of the crane escaped injury. He was arrested at the scene, on suspicion of negligence resulting in death and injury. According to the police, the man had driven the same crane for over 10 years without an accident.

Officials at the company that owns the crane said that the machine had been thoroughly tested just two days before the accident happened.
