Okinawa monorail to be first “green” of its kind

Date Posted: 2001-08-09

Okinawa Gardening Engineers’ Conference held a symposium Thursday at the Okinawa Convention Center to discuss the scenery plans along the Okinawa Urban Monorail currently under construction and scheduled to be completed in 2003.

Speakers at the symposium pointed out that when the monorail is complete, a total of 584 props supporting the rails will stand in rows for about 13 kilometers, which would become an eyesore in the landscape of the city. About 200 participants enthusiastically discussed the possibility to plant greenery along them.

Assistant Professor Hiroyuki Yamada of Wakayama University presented the main lecture at the symposium, and introduced examples of other monorails in the nation. He told that since Okinawa’s monorail is narrow, there will be enough natural light and water supply underneath, and thus the idea of planting greenery would not pose any problem. He added that that would present the very first greenery project of its kind ever in Japan if it’ successful.

After the lecture, Kazuo Higa from the Prefecture Monorail Construction Section and other participants exchanged ideas during the panel discussion. Higa explained that his office is working on an idea to cover the props with ivy.
