General Bureau officials punished for fraud attempt

Date Posted: 2001-08-03

An official investigation of the scandal involving personnel at the Okinawa General Bureau who were in May discovered to have received travel expenses for trips that never took place, has been completed.

Tsuyoshi Erikawa, the Minister of the Cabinet Office announced Monday after the conclusion of the investigation that the people working at the General Affairs Section of the Bureau had received refunds for non-existent travel expenses for a total of 16 times, amounting to ¥1.38 million over three years since 1997.

The investigation concluded that money was saved secretly, and had been used for entertainment expenses for leaders of the bureau. The Cabinet Office deemed the case to be an attempt of fraud by a group of people instead of individuals, and decided to punish the former director of the Bureau General Affairs Section, Hiroshi Koyama and 17 others. They were meted out temporary pay cuts and other administrative punishments.
