Awase reclamation project again on hold

Date Posted: 2001-08-03

Okinawa General Bureau decided to put the ground breaking on hold at the controversial Awase tideland reclamation project. The ground breaking was originally scheduled for the end of August.

People opposing the project say that it is based on false assumptions of economic development that were made during the bubble years and would never be feasible if it were to be judged by today’s standards. Other people oppose the plan on environmental grounds.

The proposed change of the plan was brought to the environmental supervising committee meeting held on Tuesday in Naha, and approved. In the committee, the bureau officials stated that confirming the successful replanting of seaweed should have priority over the construction.

The process will continue at least until the end of this year, since it will take about three months to replant the seaweed. It is also necessary to research the condition of the seaweed afterwards. The final decision on the project will be made depending on the results of the research.
