Incinerators fail to meet new standards

Date Posted: 2001-08-03

The Ministry of Environment and Okinawa Prefecture stated Tuesday that among 19 private-owned incinerators for industrial waste disposal, there was only one facility as of last December that meets the current construction standard.

The rules were revised when the new waste disposal law was enacted to control the amount of dioxin the incinerators generated. If the situation does not change by the end of next year, when the grace period is scheduled to expire, all 18 facilities will have to close down.
