Yomitan Fishing Port is located at Toya, Yomitan village, on the west coast of Okinawa’s main island. Yomitan is a big village and well known for its agricultural produce, especially for its sweet potatoes, but the village also offers visitors delicious and various kinds of fresh fish throughout the year.

Anyone who has a yearning for fresh seafood is welcome to visit the port and buy a share of the day’s catch, guaranteed to be flipping fresh.

The Yomitan Fishermen’s Association’s specialty is a big-scale fixed shore net that the fishermen tackle every day catching on average 500 kg per day. Workers at the port then process the fish for sale. The fishermen also accept visitors who can join them in taking the fish from the net. This is a new type of tourism and Yomitan village officials have high hopes that the tours will prove popular among visitors.

The months of June through August are the season for various kinds of fish including horse mackerel and Gurukun (bleeker), a local Okinawan fish. Other kinds of fish that the fishermen catch in their huge nets include mackerel, rabbitfish (Aigo in Japanese), sardine to name a few. Rabbitfish, that the association boasts as one of their specialties is rather peculiar in that it is caught just for 10 days a year; April 4 through 6, May 4 through 6, and June 4 through 6 according to the lunar calender.

Visitors can also see the fish processors’ working place and buy fresh fish caught in the net earlier on the same day. The staff will clean the fish for those who buy it and process it either for sashimi or soup.

The Yomitan Fishery Port Festival is held at the port annually on June 20. Many visitors from inside and outside of Yomitan village attend the festival, and it has become a big event especially for families. It features various enjoyable games such as a fish griping contest, jumping into the sea, tours to the fixed fishing net and the big main event, “Yomitan Dragon Boat Race.” Visitors also enjoy various kinds of seafood, such as mackerel, seaweed and turban shells.

Yomitan Fishery Port is located close to Toya area on the west coast of Yomitan village. The phone number is 098-956-1640, Japanese spoken only. There is a seafood restaurant next to the fishing port offering various fresh seafood dishes.
