Korea tour canceled because of book row

Date Posted: 2001-07-28

Okinawa Tourist Service announced Friday that they have decided to cancel a package tour to Pusan, South Korea scheduled for August, because of the current anti-Japan sentiment in South Korea over a Japanese history textbook. The Koreans say that the textbook gives a wrong impression about Japanís role in the WWII and omits the existence of Korean women who were forced to provide sex to the Japanese military during the war.

As a result, several Korean cultural groups have cancelled their scheduled visits to Japan. Korea also suspended the liberalization of Japanese cultural imports to the country, and daily protests have been held in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul.
