Chatan rape victim wants to be left alone

Date Posted: 2001-07-28

Officials revealed Tuesday that the victim of the alleged rape incident in Chatan has sent a letter to an organization called REICO that supports rape victims in Okinawa.

In her letter the woman confesses how deeply she feels hurt whenever she thinks about the incident. She also claims that her privacy has been destroyed by vicious requests for an interview by several media organizations. She also went on to write that one day a woman reporter using a false name called her in her office and asked whether she made the incident happen for money, or if she wants to speak on TV with her face covered. At the end of her letter, she pleaded everyone, and especially the media, to leave her alone.

A staff member at REICO, Suzuyo Takasato said that a suggestion that a rape victim is at fault herself hurts the victim most.
