Incumbent retains mayor’s post in Ginowan

Date Posted: 2001-07-21

The Ginowan City Mayoral election took place Sunday. The incumbent Seikou Higa was elected for the second term supported by 21,232 voters. His challenger, Mitsuo Matayoshi got only 2,111 votes.

41 percent of eligible voters cast ballots, which was even less than the previous election that marked a record low voter turnout of 48.55 percent.

Higa was first elected as a leftist, but he has since moved his policy positions to more conservative direction. Observers say that the best example is his stance on the issue of the relocation of MCAS Futenma to another location on the island. Originally he opposed the facility’s relocation within the prefecture.
