Upper House election campaign starts

Campaign for the House of Councilors, or the Upper House of the Japanese Parliament started officially Thursday.

In Okinawan constituency, the leftist lawmaker, Kantoku Teruya who is running as an independent but is supported by the Social Democratic, Democratic, Free, and New Socialist parties, looks for his second term.

His competitors include Juhishiro Nishime, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, who is also supported by Komeito and Conservative parties, and Sougi Kayou representing the Japan Communist Party.

This election will focus on Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumiís government policy. The results will likely to have an impact on such issues as the relocation of MCAS Futenma.

The election day is scheduled for July 29.
