Ryukyu dialect database unveiled

Date Posted: 2001-07-21

The Library of the University of the Ryukyus recently completed a database of the Ryukyu language and opened it to the public on their web site.

The database contains Nakijin and Shuri/Naha dialects with about 33,000 words in total. The database not only provides the meaning and usage, but also has sound bites of the pronunciation of every word. Officials at the university say with obvious pleasure that there is no other database that contains such a large number of words of a dialect with both the meaning and sound. They expect the database will be widely used in education and research.

The web site is located at www.lib.u-ryukyu.ac.jp.
