Co-op Okinawa recycles garbage into fertilizer

Date Posted: 2001-07-21

Co-op Okinawa supermarket chain started working on recycling agricultural products and food into natural fertilizer since April. They had already been recycling waste oil and meat but had been throwing away the rest of the garbage as a burnable waste.

An enterprise in Gushikawa City has made a contract with Co-op Okinawa for producing organic fertilizer using about one ton of raw garbage from five supermarkets in Okinawa every day. The process takes six months, after which the fertilizer is delivered to local farmers.

Co-op Okinawa officials say that it is the first time ever for a supermarket chain in Okinawa to start recycling all their raw garbage into fertilizer.
