Rain, water levels remain far below normal on island
Date Posted: 2002-03-08
Precipitation in the Okinawa region remained far below normal during the month of February. Daito Island received only 17 mm of rain last month, compared to its monthly average of 88.6 mm, while Okinawa and Miyako Island received 52.5 mm and 53 mm respectively, less than half their average monthly rainfall of 125.2 mm in Naha and l38.2 mm in Miyako. A small amount of rainfall is predicted from March through May, but it is not expected to alleviate the island’s growing water shortage. As of Feb. 28 the amount of water in Okinawa’s reservoirs stood at 64 percent of normal. Due to the worsening situation, the prefecture has started full operation of the Chatan Town facility that converts seawater into fresh water, producing 40,000 tons of water per day.
