Various Menu Provides Energy to Fight Against Summer Heat

Tsubohachi, one of the largest Japanese-style pub, or “Izakaya” chains presents every six months a new main menu throughout their stores. And every month, a seasonal special menu is introduced that features fresh meats, fish and vegetables. Tsubohachi chain is justifiably proud of their unique and healthy dishes.

In Okinawa City, the Nakanomachi and Goya branches of Tsubohachi are no exception of the chain-wide system. “Three of our newest additions to our menu are proving to be real hits among our customers", said Hironobu Morita, the owner of the two Okinawa City Tsubohachis, as he proudly introduces Onion Block, Prawns and Roasted Pork Fillet in Raw Spring Rolls, and Potato Basket Salad.

Onion Block is onion slices deep fried in wheat batter and intended to be eaten with ketchup. An elegant looking dish, the “Prawn and Roasted Pork Fillet In Raw Spring Rolls,” does not look like a typical Izakaya fare but rather like something that would be more at home in some other restaurant serving French cuisine. The spicy sauce for the dish is specially made and very popular among foreigners, according to Morita. The “Potato Basket Salad” consists of a crispy basket shaped fried potato, filled with vegetables, including aloe and lettuce. Morita says that customers enjoy the crispy feeling of fried potato and, at the same time, the gentle soft taste of aloe and lettuce.

There are more than 100 different dishes on the menu at Tsubohachi. The chain’s special Menu Selection Committee meets regularly to consider the selection that is evolving constantly. There are also many other interesting dishes. All dishes cost between ¥250 and about ¥500, except some kinds of sashimi sets.

Tsubohachi also features a summer special menu that includes Korean style cold noodles, squid fine noodles, eel omelet, fried eggplant and Okinawan special dishes including Goya chips (Okinawan bitter lemon), and Goya salad with pineapple. These are said to be good for fighting against summer heat.

Tsuyoshi Nakamura, a 41-year-old businessman from Osaka is on a group business trip with a group of co-workers from his Osaka-based company. With a mug of cold beer in his hand he stated merrily, "We come to Tsubohachi every time we visit Okinawa because the dishes are good and Okinawan people are nice and open to talk to. We also feel right at home here because we have a Tsubohachi right around the corner from our office in Osaka. I almost always order a walleye Pollack stick and I also like the Okinawan dishes including Goya and hirayachi, a kind of Okinawan pizza."

The Nakanomachi Branch will celebrate its 18 year anniversary on August 7 and 8. During those two days all the dishes are served at 50% off prices.

Tsubohachi Nakanomachi Branch is located across the street from Four Seasons Steak House. Going out from KAB Gate 2, turn right just before the Goya intersection. Goya branch is located on route 330, across from Ichibankan shopping mall. Neither restaurant has their own parking space but there are several pay parking lots near by.
