Seamen’s Club open house features Okinawa

Date Posted: 2001-07-13

Okinawa customs, culture, food and entertainment are showcased Saturday as the United Seamen’s Service, Okinawa, hosts its first Okinawa Day Festival. The nine-hour event is open to everyone, American, International and Okinawan communities alike. The action gets under way at noon in and outside the Seamen’s Club building at Naha Port.

Cornerstone of the festival will be more than a dozen authentic Okinawan foods, plus desserts and drinks. The buffet menu was structured to provide Americans and other foreigners an enjoyable overview of the many Okinawan foods.

Ala carte service will also be available offering steaks, barbequed ribs, chicken, burgers, salads and French fries. While the Okinawa buffet closes at nine o’clock, the ala carte food line will remain open until ten.

Entertainment on both indoor and outdoor stages begins at 2:00 p.m. Okinawa dancers, singers, instrumental musicians, Eisa and martial arts demonstrations will perform outside, while Okinawan traditional music and dances entertain folks in the main dining room. Several of the island’s top classical musicians will show their skills throughout the afternoon.

Okinawa’s native drink, Awamori, will be showcased both at an exhibition and with presentations of Awamori cocktails featuring 16 of the island’s 48 different brands. Members of the Nippon Bartenders’ Association, headed by Katsunobu Shingaki, Tokyo Area Vice President, will whip up the classic Awamori cocktails. Draft beer will flow in tents at ¥300 a mug.

Okinawan tourism authorities, as well as the military’s tour services, will have booths highlighting travel and adventure opportunities for servicemen and women and families. Other exhibits feature Okinawa customs and culture.

Service personnel should check with the ITT and MCCS Tours offices for availability of tour bus service to the Seamen's Club, Okinawa. Visitors may also use local buses and taxis, or use their own cars. Organizers remind visitors not to drink and drive.
