Technique is the Last Man Standing

By: David Knickerbocker

Date Posted: 2001-07-13

Local Hip Hop artist Technique will perform at the Foster PowerZone July 15 with Eddie Kane and Lyrical Assassin to promote his upcoming debut CD “Last Man Standing”. He will perform from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is your chance to pick up a copy of his much-anticipated album and to meet the artist on a personal level. He will also sign autographs.

According to Technique, the theme of the album “Last Man Standing” is about how back in the beginning, when the album was little more than an idea, many people approached him saying that he should work on an album. Since then, many people have worked with him and fallen to the wayside due to time limitations and other reasons, and by the end of the project Technique was one of the last of the original people still around. “It takes a lot of time and work, and some people have come on the project and others have fallen off,” says Technique.

“Looking back at things, the entire album is a story,” says Technique. “It’s all about self-expression. You will understand the stories if you dig deep enough, but at the same time you will enjoy the album even without knowing what everything is about. You don’t have to dig too deep at first. It’ll make sense eventually.” The recording project began in March 2000 and was finished near Christmas, nine months later. According to Technique, “Many of the tracks were written in simple form so everybody can catch on easily and enjoy it.”

Unlike many mainstream rap and hip-hop albums, “Last Man Standing” is not about negativity. It is focused more on love and variety. Technique explains, “Some songs are perfect for listening at home and others were made for a club setting. Some tracks are straight hip-hop to display my ability, and other songs such as ‘One Life to Live’ — a track about looking back on life retrospectively — have a lot of deep meaning.”

In Technique’s own opinion, the track ‘This Time’ is the best song on the album. “If this album makes it, it’ll be because of that,” he says.

Technique has put in his fair share of hard work, paying his dues by performing at clubs 3F, Sauce, Bump, Pow Wow, the Globe and Anchor, at Chatan Park, and most recently at this year’s AmericaFest. He has done pretty well for himself, opening for groups such as Naughty by Nature, K-Ci and Jo Jo, Case, Jade, and De La Soul, and has managed to build quite a following on island.

“Last Man Standing” will be available at Tower Record and Sam Goody for ¥1,500 and sold on base shops for $9.95.
