Arsenic, mercury detected in ground water

The results of a groundwater research conducted by Okinawa Prefecture officials last year at various locations over the island, were made public, Monday.

Officials say that the survey detected arsenic in seven and mercury in three wells, exceeding the legal limits. Officials say that the arsenic seems to have streamed out from the soil, but added that they have no clue regarding the origins of the mercury.

The places where the mercury was detected in excessive concentrations are Noborikawa and Chibana in Okinawa City, and Kadegaru in Ishikawa City. Arsenic was detected at Yafuso and Toyama in Urasoe City, Yogi in Okinawa City, Ishikawa and Shirahama in Ishikawa City, plus in two wells at Tancha, Onna Village.
