Ancient bamboo basket discovered within Lester

Date Posted: 2001-07-13

A bamboo basket that was supposedly used about five thousand years ago in early Jomon period was recovered from Ireibaru Ruins located within camp Lester in Chatan Town.

Researchers say that the basket is the oldest item ever found in Okinawa. Officials in charge of cultural affairs in the town’s Board of Education say the basket needs a more study for details, but it will be a valuable item that will help to shed light to lifestyles of that time.

The basket is about one square meter in size and 2.7 meters in depth. One official assumes that Jomon people used the basket as a food container.
