Conservatives prevail in Naha Assembly election

Date Posted: 2001-07-13

Naha City Assembly Elections took place on Sunday. As a result, the governing conservative parties were able to secure the majority by retaining more than half of the seats.

Political commentators say that the results mean that Naha citizens approve the policies of the current conservative mayor, Takeshi Onaga.

The election results also mean that the city is ready for smooth procedures for governmental reforms and the move of Naha Military Port to a new location in Urasoe City.

Almost 59 percent of the electorate cast ballots, which is slightly more than in the last election that marked the lowest figure ever at 56.02 percent.

Reflecting the high voting rate of women, five female candidates were all elected.
