MCAS relocation opponents prepare for U.S. court

Date Posted: 2001-07-13

Regarding the construction plan of the relocation facility of MCAS Futenma, non-governmental organization Nature Rights Foundation formed a team of plaintiffs, Saturday, preparing for litigation at a United States District Court. The group is taking the U.S. Government to the court in order to press for the preservation of dugongs and sea turtles that inhabit the sea off Henoko, Nago City.

One of the plaintiffs, a lawyer, says “The construction of base facilities destroy not only the dugongs but also the whole eco-system of the area. Once our law suit is started, it will never stop until the construction of the facility is canceled.”

In the lawsuit, the Endangered Species Act will be the key, and the plaintiffs wow to bring the case to the court if the Department of Defense fails to respond favorably.
