40 percent of HS teachers favor corporal punishment

Date Posted: 2001-07-13

According to the survey conducted by the Prefectural High School Teachersí Union among its 1,920 members, 40 percent of them accept using a corporal punishment when they think the situation warrants it.

The Union officials were reportedly perplexed by the result although more than half of the teachers are against such punishment. Two percent even answered that corporal punishment is an effective tool in maintaining discipline, and another two percent claimed that parents have asked them to discipline their children with such punishment.

One of the teachers who oppose corporal punishment suspects that the studentsí behavior in these days is so bad that the teachers do not know what else to do.
