Awase project not likely to come to popular vote

Date Posted: 2001-07-13

Okinawa City Special Investigating Committee discussed the Awase tideland reclamation project Friday afternoon.

At the meeting, the committee made a decision by a majority vote not to take up the proposal that the city should ask the citizens whether or not to freeze the plan. The committee then decided once again to bring up the subject to the full city assembly meeting scheduled for July 16.

But as 26 out of 35 assembly members are against conducting a popular vote concerning the project despite several citizensí groupsí efforts to get the project cancelled altogether, the proposal is likely to be turned down.

Many citizensí groups regard the project as unnecessary pork for local construction companies and want to cancel it. Many also claim that the projectís environmental impact has not been fully assessed.
