Official urge measles vaccinations

Date Posted: 2001-07-13

The joint task force of the Prefecture, Prefectural Vaccination Conference, Doctors’ Association, and the Prefectural Children’s Health Association made an announcement, Thursday, encouraging people to get vaccinations against measles, as the illness has reportedly expanded to epidemic proportions since April.

This is the third time that a measles epidemic has been announced in Okinawa over the last decade. In April a nine-month-old girl died of complications cause by measles in Southern part of the Island. As of ’99, only 69 percent of the population had received vaccinations. However, experts say that 95 percent or more of the population need to be vaccinated in order to prevent the measles developing into an epidemic.
