Marine live-fire practice sparks blaze in Kin Town
Date Posted: 2002-03-08
The Naha Defense Facilities Administration Bureau (DFAB) reported on Feb. 27 that a fire caused by U.S. Marine Corps firing practice occurred in the mountainous area close to Camp Hansen’s Range Four in Kin Town. The fire was extinguished after forested land estimated at approximately 130,000 square meters was destroyed. Six fires have already broken out in the first two months of this year, whereas a total of five blazes occurred in all of 2001. The local governments of Onna and Kin have submitted protests to DFAB, and Nago City Mayor Tateo Kishimoto announced his intention of insisting that Camp Schwab halt firing practice and stop disposing of wasted shells.
