Orion beer faces smaller profits, stiff competition

Date Posted: 2001-07-07

Orion Beer held its general meeting of stockholders June 27 at Hotel Seibu Orion in Naha. The meeting approved the final balance sheet of the company for the fiscal year 2000.

According to the published balance figures, the company had sales of about 22 billion, 3.9 percent less than a year before. The company has seen its sales decline for the last four consecutive years.

According to company officials, the main cause is the reduction of the consumption of beer. Another reason is the increase in the sales of popular sparkling alcoholic beverages that are less expensive than beer. Stiff competition by mainland beer producers, and the increase in promotion expenses also contributed to reduction of the company net profits by 17.4 percent compared to the previous year.
