Prefecture officials ponder future development

Date Posted: 2001-07-07

Okinawa Prefectural Office opened the local development committee, Friday, in order to decide primary ideas on the development of Okinawa. The ideas will be included in a proposal to the New Okinawa Development Plan that will be discussed with the national government.

There has been three Okinawa special development plans since the war and they have always been aiming at minimizing the development and income gap between the mainland and Okinawa. This time, however, the committee has decided to change the direction. The new focus is to give a full play to Okinawa’s local character, and to diminish the perceived disadvantages of Okinawa. More concrete ideas, such as a sustainable development towards financial independence and creating a hub for co-operation and exchange with the out side world, are proposed as the pillars of the new plan..

Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine expressed his support for the new plan stating, “We will submit these ideas to the national government immediately, and work on to reflect those ideas in the future legislation in order to realize our goals.”
