Naha assembly election campaign starts

Date Posted: 2001-07-07

The election campaign of Naha City Assembly members officially got under way Sunday. A total of 54 people filed for candidacy vying for 44 seats in the assembly. They will spend seven days campaigning until the voting day on next Sunday. Candidates mainly focus on issues concerning Naha Military Port, and the government reform in this election.

This is the first assembly election after Naha’s conservative mayor Takeshi Onaga was elected last December ending 32 years of leftist rule in the Naha City Mayor’s Office. All parties consider this an important election. At issue is whether conservatives can secure the majority in the assembly, or if leftists who oppose the relocation of Naha Military Port to Urasoe and Onaga’s policy of increasing the current number of seats in the assembly will carry the day. Moreover, this election is considered a pre-match for the Upper House election scheduled for July 29.
