He decided to pursue music on a full-time level when his talent became recognized at the recording of “Moon Flower,” a session album with master jazz drummer Elvin Jones. Soon after the recording, he joined the world tour of Elvin Jones = Jazz Machine and traveled with the band from 1980 to 1985. After returning home, he formed a trio with guitarist Larry Coliel and saxophonist Steve Leverman, released his solo album in 1985, and held a solo concert in 1986. In 1988, Fumio formed the Karashima Fumio Quintet by welcoming gifted drummer Shingo Okudaira to the mix, and three years later, the band received the Paul Winner award in the popular band section of Swing Journal, a popular Japanese Jazz magazine. Soon after, in 1992, the band was invited to play at the Japan Jazz Festival in Sydney, Australia where Fumio received a standing ovation for his duo with guitarist Kazuhiko Michishita. Since then, through hard work and a heavy tour schedule, he has left a favorable impression of himself on audiences all over the world.
