Dolphins bring smile on allergic children

Date Posted: 2001-06-29

Oceanic Wellness Foundation held a dolphin therapy class, Sunday, at Renaissance Resort Okinawa in Onna Village. The class was intended for children suffering from atopic dermatitis.

Twenty families participated and tried the programs offered by the Foundation. Almost all of the children never had touched dolphins in the past, so they were understandably nervous in the beginning. However, gradually they became accustomed to the animals, which brought broad smiles on the children’s faces.

Children with atopic dermatitis are allergic to animals with fur, but not to the oceanic mammals, such as dolphins. The foundation has conducted research on this therapy since 1996, and has sent their staff to study at the Dolphin Research Center in Florida. Okinawa is currently the only place in Japan offering such program.
