NHK drama popular in South America

Date Posted: 2001-06-29

The popular NHK morning serial drama, “Churasan,” that depicts the life of a young Okinawan girl and her family, has been well perceived among the Okinawan descendants in South American countries including Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil.

Some say it is nostalgic to see Okinawan scenery, others say they like the way casts speaks. In South America, on the opposite side of the earth, it is possible to watch the Japanese TV programs through satellite or cable TV at different times.

In Brazil Japanese programs are now broadcast regularly on satellite TV. Many second and third generation immigrants would like to see more TV programs focusing on Okinawa. The Okinawan people on the other side of the world would like to stay in touch with the old copuntry even if only through TV screens.
