Gas thoughts

Date Posted: 2001-06-22

My letter is in response to "Gas woes can be overcome" by "The other side of coin" Update Letters 14-20 Jun. 2001.

"The other side of coin" missed the main reason for most of the letters. The majority of those writers found it difficult to understand the logic AAFES used for justifying the price increase. "Our customers demanded a price increase", "We increased the price so that we may better serve our customers" and "AAFES expects to loose money because of the price increase" are all more inscrutable reasons than any Japanese politician could dream up.

AAFES gas stations usually have one pump designated "Full Service." However; "The other side of coin" is correct when suggesting that the service off base is better and we may enjoy being pampered also, but I find getting back into traffic after gassing up easier on base. I admire the daring service attendant that will willingly run out into the road, take his hat off and bow, stopping all on coming traffic so that you can proceed with your trip. However; it is very dangerous because it is a proven fact that the speed of certain

colors such as red, yellow, green and some visual image's such as cat's, dog's and the rear end of certain auto's are not perceived at the same rate of speed of most other colors and images. It may be a speed of light phenomena or something to do with the nerve from the eyeball and where the other end is hooked up. I believe it may be caused by something in the exhaust or a new virus and is not genetic because I've noticed an increasing number of Americans suffering from the same symptoms. I worry that the visual image speed factor for an attendant with his hat off and bowing in the middle of the road may be similar to the speed factor for cat's.

"The other side of coin's reasoning is flawed in assuming that closing AAFES gas stations and giving shoppers an increase in COLA to buy off base would stop the complaining, and is primarily interested in another way to subsidize his/her own spending habits. "The other side of coin" may be surprised at the number of cars with "Japanese" plates patronizing AAFES. Unless we can come up with a way of compensating them also, the complaints will only increase! I also suspect that if "The other side of coin" were to also become another of the thousands of satisfied AAFES customers, he/she might be willing to

forgo some of that excellent service and/or PAMPERING provided off base and dump his/her own ashtray! After gassing up "The other side of coin" might also be agreeable to picking up a bag of California rice even though his/her intestinal track is very likely designed for Japanese rice only.
