Prefecture mulling allowing gaming casinos

Date Posted: 2001-06-22

The Okinawa Prefectural Development Committee held a meeting, Monday, preparing for the final submission of the prefecture’s proposal of new development plans to the national government early next month.

The put final touches to the proposal before it goes to Governor Keiichi Inamine for final approval on Wednesday. The main topic of the day was whether or not casino industry should be introduced to Okinawa. Upon a request from representatives of the Industry Division of the Committee, officials added a sentence to the proposal that Okinawa considers the possibility of diversifying its entertainment industry.

Koichi Kokuba, the chairman of Okinawa Construction Association had demanded that the proposal states clearly that Okinawa will introduce the gaming industry into the prefecture. Some members disagreed with his opinion saying such a proposal needs a thorough discussion before introduction.
