Cost of traffic jams estimate

Ministry of Land and Transportation filed a report, Saturday, for the first time ever, on losses caused by traffic congestion.

According to the report, a total of •12 trillion per year was lost because of delays in delivery and increased fuel for cars and trucks stuck in traffic jams. That averages •95,000 per person nation wide. Per each prefecture, the nationís largest cities were the worst. Tokyo has the dubious honor to be the holder of the worst record at •1.5 trillion. Osaka, the second largest city in Japan was the second at •693 billion. The cost of traffic jams in Okinawa was estimated to be •160 billion, which places it the 24th among all 47 prefectures. At the same time, when the losses are calculated per a kilometer, Okinawa made the disgraceful third place with its number losses from traffic jams amounting to •22 million per kilometer of road.
