Foreign pair sought in ¥1.1 mln larceny

Date Posted: 2002-03-08

A series of thefts occurred on March 2 during which a total of ¥1.1 million was stolen from seven shops in central Okinawa. The criminals and their method of operation were similar in every instance in that a pair of foreigners stole cash while requesting change. The police are searching for the perpetrators using a picture taken by a security camera. They are also sending out a warning to all shops at risk of being victimized in the same manner.

According to the police investigation, a pair of foreigners went to seven places of business including supermarkets, electronics stores and the DIY store in Okinawa City, Gushikawa, Ginowan, Urasoe and Chatan. While at the casher they first requested a ¥10,000 note for two ¥5,000 bills. Then they apparently reached over and grabbed some cash from the register while pretending to look for a fresh bill. It appears that the criminals were quite devious since staff members did not notice the missing cash until they closed the registers to count the day’s money.
