Record number of locals apply for base jobsDate Posted: 2001-06-08 According to officials, a total of 21,854 people applied, which marks 10,121 people more than last year, the most ever. They say that the large number of applicants strongly reflects the general employment situation in Okinawa that is currently bad especially among younger people. According to the office, cafeterias at Marine Corps bases had announced that they would hire 231 new employees, and that was another reason for the record numbers. The U.S. bases in Okinawa reportedly hire around 800 people a year on average. Thus competition for those jobs is very hard. In general, working conditions on bases are comparably better and more stable than ordinary private firms in Okinawa offer. |
