Sea turtle eggs found at proposed landfill site

Date Posted: 2001-06-08

Local conservationist group confirmed May 13 and 17 that sea turtles were discovered laying eggs on beaches around Shioya Bay in Ogimi Village. The area where the turtle nests were found is where village officials are planning a landfill to reclaim some forty hectares of land.

Village officials have claimed steadfast so far that based on environmental research commissioned by the village office, sea turtle spawning places do not exist on the shores of the bay. Even after the eggs were found, Village Mayor Rinzan Teruya wowed that the plan would never change because consideration of the project had been made from every possible angle. He added that the village office had acquired the consent of the residents. He also said that an artificial beach would be built on the reclaimed land so that there would be even more beach front for the turtles to lay eggs on. Meanwhile, a member of a group opposing the plan said his group wants to urge village officials to hold more discussions on the necessity of the landfill project.
